Reach new heights in Ecuador!

The high Andean peaks of Ecuador are located primarily along the Avenue of the Volcanoes, a fertile central valley, which is buttressed by two ranges, the Eastern and Western Cordilleras. Most of the highland populace, including the indigenous Quichua, ekes out an agrarian living in this region.

Some of the summits are young, cone-shaped volcanoes like Cotopaxi with technically straight-forward climbs offering the novice a chance to get near or above 6000m. Others are deeply eroded, older volcanoes with challenging rock and ice routes .

For your first few days in Ecuador, you should acclimatize by ascending some of the smaller mountains, such as Iliniza Norte, Imbabura or Pichincha to avoid developing AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) or the more severe Pulmonary Adenoma or Cerebral Adenoma. These lower peaks are non-glaciated, easily accessible within a day's travel from Quito. (we have a number of day trips available that are great for the acclimatisation process). Most of the mountains do not require extensive climbing experience, however due to the altitude many of the treks can be quite challenging. Included in the itinerary is a short practice walk on ice to explain how to use the equipment, before the real climb. First aid equipment, radios and cellular phones are all part of the guide's equipment.

Notes:
  • Excellent physical condition is necessary.
  • Acclimatization to high altitude is a must (trekking is a perfect preparation).
  • Extensive climbing experience is not required for most mountains.
  • One experienced bilingual mountain guide for every two clients is provided.
